Ludwig Mies van der Rohe: a master of minimalism

 

A pioneer of the Modern Movement: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, born in Aachen in 1886, was was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. His design philosophy, centered on minimalism and functionality, revolutionized the way of conceiving spaces and contributed to defining the principles of the Movement Modern. After an apprenticeship at renowned architectural firms in Berlin, Mies van der Rohe established himself as a designer and quickly as a leading figure in the German art scene. In 1937, Mies van der Rohe moved to in the United States, where he continued his prolific career. Among his works the most iconic ones include the German Pavilion at the 1929 Universal Exhibition in Barcelona, the Seagram Building in New York and the Farnsworth House in Illinois.
