FontanaArte

Suspended between art and industry

FontanaArte was founded in 1932, one year after architect Gio Ponti was appointed artistic director of Luigi Fontana & C., a company specializing in crystal, glass, and mirror production. The new brand emerged to meet the needs of designers, artists, and decorators, offering the material and sculptural qualities of glass at a time when industrial production was viewed as a form of art. Manufacturing expertise became artistic expression, through Ponti’s vision and later collaborations with Gae Aulenti, Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, and many others.

Thanks to Gio Ponti’s contribution and his advocacy for cultural unity in the industrial age, art became a defining part of the company’s identity. This legacy was recognized in 1998 with the Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement and, in 2022, with the brand’s inclusion in the Register of Historic Trademarks of national interest.
